off topic: recommend cheap scanner?

Sorry if this is an inappropriate question for this forum, but I’m looking to buy an inexpensive 3D scanner to help create game/animation characters (by “inexpensive” I mean under US$2000). I’m leaning towards the Occipital Structure – I realize it is probably a bit amateurish, but tbh that is my level (I own iPads and most of my 3D work is on osX). I’d use Wrap to transfer head/body scans to the Adobe Fuse basemesh or similar. Is the Structure useable, or is there something better in this price range?

Thank you for any advice/opinion.

Hey,

I don’t have any experience with Structure, but when it comes to facial scanning, I would definitely use photogrammetry. We’ve started with x6 Canon 1200D ($380  x 6 = $2280) Here is the quality from our first tests with 6 cameras and light from a window:

To me photogrammetry has several crutial advantages over most hand-held devices:

  1. Scalability. You can buy more cameras as you become professional and increase scanning quality.
  2. Good texture quality.
  3. Capture time under several miliseconds (the subject movement doesn’t affect scanning quality).
On the other hand you will most likely have some hard time synchronizing cameras and flashes but to me it worth it.

I would highly recommend to join 3D Scanning Users Group on Facebook. There’s a lot of info on this topic there.
