Alt+middle-button not recognized? Can't control Viewport3D (Ubuntu)

hi, sorry for another ridiculous newbie question. :-\ I have no mouse control over the Viewport3D window. Other than F and S keys, I have no ability to middle-click (video tutorial) or Alt+middle-click (documentation)… The interface doesn’t respond.

As far as I can tell my trackball is configured correctly in Ubuntu: (xev shows LMB=button 1, MMB=button 2, RMB=button 3, I can reprogram this but assume MMB should = 2).

I’ve tried connecting a few other mice/trackballs. The scrollwheel can zoom the Viewport, but I can’t rotate or pan.
Any suggestions? (or recommendation for another trackball that works?)
Thank you…

It is probably because Alt button is reserved for something else in the system. Let me send you a patch that will solve it by assigning Ctrl button instead of Alt button, ok?

Ok, willing to try just about anything…

( :-[ may need instructions how to apply it)

Thank you for the hint about the Alt key…. I have installed something called CompizConfig Settings Manager and followed the instructions from this Blender forum post (change the “Initiate Window Move” option to another key):
https://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?207215-Alt-key-doesn-t-work-in-Ubuntu-SOLVED&p=2115869#post2115869

I am now able to use the Alt+buttons to manipulate the viewport.

Hello!

Sorry to be little late in this thread, just my two cents. It’s a very common problem for Linux users, but since they usually have background with tools like Maya on Linux, they face the same problem and it is typically already solved like you did. I will add this in the FAQ section of site or maybe even embed detector of this case into Linux version.

Anyway here is another link with solutions (with yours) for next users who can see this thread in the future http://askubuntu.com/questions/521423/how-can-i-disable-altclick-window-dragging

As a follow-follow up to this old problem, the current version of Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS + Wrap3.3.17 now recognizes Left+Right Click as “middle button”…
At least on my old Logitech Marble Mouse trackball.

Nothing extra needs to be installed.
